Maya

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Maya is a sensitive female German Shepherd. When she arrived here, her gaze still reflected her sorrowful past filled with pain. Maya had been in the dog kennel for more than a year, even though she had an owner. We suspect that she received little love in her old home, as she was simply left behind in the kennel. When Maya had a stomach torsion and needed urgent treatment, the owner told the vet to put her down because she didn’t want to deal with the costs, as she hadn’t in the past months either. Fortunately, the responsible person at the kennel sought help from our cooperative partners, Perrunas en Calma, and they took over the responsibility for Maya and her medical care. Today, she has fully recovered from this life-saving operation, and her stomach is now so stable that it won’t happen again. Maya shows her charming nature to everyone. She is very happy to receive any human affection and has learned that people are happy when she gives them a paw and sits. She likes to snuggle, but unfortunately, there is rarely time for it in the kennel. Maya shares an exercise yard with other dogs and interacts without problems with her fellow animals, as long as no one bothers her. She shares her pen with a young male dog and tolerates his sometimes overexcited nature patiently. It is wonderful to see her with the kennel’s responsible person, as she adores him and follows him faithfully and clingy. And as befits a German Shepherd, she watches over him well. She would follow him anywhere and do anything he asks of her. The loyalty to the person who guides her is in her nature. Maya has physically and emotionally recovered over the past months, now she is a beautiful shepherd dog who longs to join her forever human. Her Leishmaniasis titer has dropped rapidly since she started taking medication and is barely measurable anymore. And with her blood values at their best, she can lead the same life as any other dog. At her last vet visit (09/2025), she behaved very well and willingly. Also, walking on the leash works flawlessly. Mayas suitcase is packed quickly, as she doesn’t bring much more than her trust in people and the hope to finally arrive.

DE·Show original

About Maya

What life with Maya looks like

Maya is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
