Mela

Female · Senior · 10 years

Mela is a female dog of the boxer type, who upon arriving at the animal shelter immediately showed with her eyes that she had a very difficult life before coming under our care. Neglected, thin, frightened by the world so much that even her own shadow terrified her. During the first walks with Melą, one could get the impression that everything around her was completely new, as if she saw grass, a car or a street for the first time in her life. Including the fact that even touching a person caused her great uncertainty and fear. However, day by day our Melcia is changing beyond recognition! Increasingly often we see her happy, curious about the world and willing to have closer contact with people. Mela needs time to trust humans, but once it happens, the female dog gladly uses the shared moments spent on cuddles and walks, which now seem to be always too few 😊 Meli's fight against fears was greatly helped by the company of a canine companion during walks. However, our sweetheart only likes males. She has no sympathy for female dog. Melania could eventually live in a home where there is already a stable resident dog, a male, after a positive assessment of the relationship between the dogs during pre-adoption walks. Due to her character, we do not recommend her for a home with children. We prefer the future caregiver's place of residence to be in a quiet area, without intense urban stimuli. We are looking for a caregiver for Meli ready to patiently build a relationship, someone calm, someone who will understand Melcia's nature and know how to work through her fears on a daily basis. We are looking for someone with experience working with dogs, Melcia is not a suitable candidate for a first dog friend. Ideally, the future caregiver of Meli would know the specifics of the breed, which our blonde represents. Mela has a huge reservoir of unused love, it's clear she lacks closeness. We are convinced that Melcia has a chance to become an ideal canine companion, all it takes is giving her a chance for a better future.

PL·Show original

Coraz częściej widzimy ją radosną, ciekawą świata i chętną do bliższych kontaktów z człowiekiem.

About Mela

What life with Mela looks like

Mela is a medium-sized senior dog waiting at Schronisko Na Paluchu in Warsaw.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Note from the shelter: Severe trauma recovery - needs patient owner experienced with fearful dogs, quiet environment away from urban stimuli

🇵🇱Adopting from Poland

Polish shelters maintain established transport routes to Germany, Netherlands, Austria, and Sweden. Animals leave sterilized and chipped. Adoption fees are typically lower than in Western Europe (often €50–€150) but adopters cover transport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mela, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mela?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Schronisko Na Paluchu handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mela on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mela if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Schronisko Na Paluchu will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mela already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mela isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Schronisko Na Paluchu early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mela and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (PL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
