Melvin

Greyhound Β· Male Β· Adult Β· 6 years

This beautiful boy is 6 year old Melvin. He's the most loving, kind and gentle boy and all of us here at Barley adore him. Melvin originally came to us a couple of years ago and found a lovely home but sadly he was returned to us as his temperament changed and he didn't want to go for walks which resulted in him snapping at his owner a few times. When he came back into our care it was clear that he was uncomfortable with his feet, he didn't want to walk and laid down a lot. On closer inspection we found that he had 7 corns on various different pads on his feet and they were obviously causing him a lot of pain and discomfort (his owners vet had missed this). He had treatment and surgery for his corns and has recovered really well. It's been over 6 months since his treatment and we are pleased to say he's remained sound with no more corns appearing and he is really enjoying his walks again. He gets so excited to go out and loves playing with his toys in the field. Having previously lived in a home he is housetrained and is also an excellent traveller. He's such a great boy and deserves to find his loving forever home. A quiet home where be can enjoy nice rural walks would be ideal for him. He'd like a home without children or small animals. He can be homed as an only pet or with a Greyhound girl providing introductions go well. Melvin is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, will go home with collar & lead, house collar, muzzle, teddy, 2kg bag of kibble, Dorwest Herbs supplement, information pack and a lifetime of support and back up should you ever need it. Homechecks and donation apply. If you think you can offer Melvin the home he deserves please will in a pre-adoption questionnaire

About Melvin

What life with Melvin looks like

Melvin is a small adult greyhound dog waiting at Barley Greyhound Sanctuary in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Melvin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Melvin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Barley Greyhound Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Melvin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Melvin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Barley Greyhound Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Melvin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Melvin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Barley Greyhound Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Melvin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
