Merengue

Belgian Malinois · Male · Adult · 4 years

Friends of dog sports, take note - here comes Merengue! Merengue arrived at the animal shelter Los Barrios in March 2023 and was about 1.5 years old when he arrived. He is a beautiful Malinois mix who was probably found on the street and brought to the shelter. What a powerhouse!!! He is such a great male dog who wants to be a Malinois type. He loves to play and has a lot of energy; spending the majority of the day in a kennel is very stressful for him. Merengue is really smart and attentive, he picks things up very quickly, makes eye contact and has an incredible desire to work with you. He already knows a few basic commands, like "sit" and "shake". He is positive towards people and other dogs. Merengue is very lucky. He is currently in another association in a calmer environment - less stressful and much better for him, but he still needs a home of his own - a family with experience with Malinois. For this wonderful male dog, we wish people who give him time to adjust, show a lot of patience and understanding. Let him receive love, attention and many shared adventures as well as consistent and loving training. Especially for Malinois, it is important that they come to people who have dealt extensively with the breed or have already had experience. They are special dogs that are not suitable for every lifestyle and need adapted physical and mental stimulation. One should be clear about this before deciding on such a special dog. We are working together with the Spanish team to get to know the dogs well and describe their behavior in the shelter or on foster homes. Nevertheless, some dogs may temporarily behave differently in the new family during the first period than described in the text. The dogs have to cope here in Germany with many new impressions, strange dogs and unfamiliar people and get to know them. Please always give the dogs the time they need! If you are aware of what comes with adopting a rescue dog and you have fallen in love with the rescue dog, please contact the responsible adoption officer from SALVA Dog Help. We would also be very happy about a sponsorship. Here is Merengue's video.

About Merengue

What life with Merengue looks like

Merengue is a large adult belgian malinois dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merengue, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merengue?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merengue on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merengue if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merengue already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merengue isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merengue and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
