Adopt Merlin

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

The black Merlin lived in Romania. He was found outside the "Open Animal Shelter" Sisterea near a farm. He was very thin and full of parasites. He was neither microchipped nor neutered and was not being sought. He was taken in by the "Open Animal Shelter" Sisterea, vaccinated, neutered, and dewormed. On May 9, 2026, he came through the ITV Grenzenlos into Germany and is now at the "Guesthouse for Animals" with Luiza. The black beauty is now waiting for her new home. Merlin is a Flat Coated Retriever and, according to his age, lively and adventurous. Although he has become a bit fatter in the animal shelter, he is very happy, active, and playful. Therefore, he needs a sporty home, plenty of mental stimulation, and like all dogs in the animal shelter, good training. He has already learned to walk on a leash. However, he is still unfamiliar with life in a house. The friendly male dog is always in good spirits and alert. He is ideal as a family dog. He also gets along well with other dogs. The black Merlin was born in mid-2022 and is 58 cm tall. He has been in the animal shelter since 2024. He has received full medical pre-treatment. The heartworm test was done before he came to Germany. If anyone is interested in this friendly male dog, please contact ITV Grenzenlos at: or . Merlin in video:

About Merlin

What life with Merlin looks like

Merlin is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ITV Grenzenlos e.V. in Essel.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Merlin, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Merlin?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ITV Grenzenlos e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Merlin on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Merlin if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ITV Grenzenlos e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Merlin already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Merlin isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ITV Grenzenlos e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Merlin and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
