Adopt Mika

German Shorthaired Pointer · Male · Young · 2 years

Breed: German Shorthaired Pointer Gender: male Date of Birth: ca. 03/2024 Size: ca. 63 cmThe two-year-old male dog was found emaciated on the streets of Romania in September 2025 and was taken in by the animal shelter Free Amely. There, he showed himself to be very friendly, people-oriented, and cuddly. Mika was rehomed to Germany through Pfotenherz Tierschutz mit Verstand e.V. He is an intelligent, active, and exercise-loving dog who enjoys the company of his people. He meets new situations with curiosity and openness. Whether jogging, hiking, or other outdoor activities – Mika is happy to join in and walks well on a leash. He masters the basic commands and recall is already reliable. Due to his hunting drive, he should be led on a leash outside of secured areas. He particularly enjoys nose work, tracking, and dummy training, in which he works with concentration and motivation. In general, Mika is compatible with other dogs. He rides in the car without issue, is house-trained, and can be left alone for short periods after adjustment. After appropriate physical and mental exertion, he relaxes well in the home. The young male dog bonds closely with his trusted people and values affection and physical closeness. In his previous homes, he displayed defensive behavior towards people when they approached him or his primary caregiver. Mika requires experienced people who can convey security through clear structures, reliable rules, and good management. We are looking for active people who enjoy shared mental stimulation and can provide the necessary orientation, as well as physical and mental exertion for an eager working hunting dog. Mika will be rehomed through Pfotenherz Tierschutz mit Verstand e.V. We offer assistance in finding a match and hope that the young male dog finds a suitable home. Interested parties can meet Mika at our animal shelter. They can contact us via email:

About Mika

What life with Mika looks like

Mika is a large young adult german shorthaired pointer dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Heilbronn in Heilbronn.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mika, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mika?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Heilbronn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mika on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mika if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Heilbronn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mika already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mika isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Heilbronn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mika and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
