Milano

Mixed Breed · Unknown

In this pre-Christmas period, which is becoming increasingly colder as we approach December, we thought we would tell you about a beautiful charitable initiative promoted and organized by the association Save the dogs. It is called "Amici di strada compagni di vita," a program aimed at helping the hundreds of homeless people who share existence on the streets with one or more dogs in the city of Milan. The phenomenon of homelessness mainly affects large urban centers, which in Italy and throughout Europe have seen an increase in homeless people in recent years. In collaboration with Fondazione Progetto Arca Onlus - an association that helps the most vulnerable people through various services and initiatives - the operators of Save the dogs monitor the situation of animals living with the homeless people that Arca takes care of, with the intention of providing veterinary and assistance support. Volunteers manage vaccinations, sterilizations, check-ups and any necessary treatments, but also provide equipment tailored to the needs of a dog: food first, a first aid kit, bowl, leash, anti-parasitic products, and even a coat that can be useful for many dogs living outdoors in winter. In short, everything you might need to improve the conditions of street dogs and, together with their human companions. The idea is also to create a relationship of trust with them, the homeless people and relationships that hold on to an unshakable point of reference, the friendship with their dog. The goal of Save the dogs for 2022 is to consolidate the project in Milan and then expand it to other Italian cities, following the example of StreetVet Uk, the British veterinary association that takes care of the dogs of the homeless in various locations across the United Kingdom and which Save the dogs contacted to organize its intervention in the most effective way. Sharing constructive practices is another element in favor of the project "Amici di strada compagni di vita," an action that shows great positive strength, full of sensitivity towards the well-being of people and animals, and that can be supported, for those who wish, through a donation.

About Milano

What life with Milano looks like

Milano is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Associazione Onlus Apaca in Italy.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇮🇹Adopting from Italy

Italian canili require adopters to sign a stewardship contract (affido) and may retain the right to verify the animal's wellbeing post-adoption. Animals are chipped and sterilized before leaving (Legge 281/91). Public canili rifugio typically waive adoption fees.

Frequently asked

Adopting Milano, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Milano?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Associazione Onlus Apaca handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Milano on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Milano if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Associazione Onlus Apaca will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Milano already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Milano isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Associazione Onlus Apaca early rather than rehoming privately; they know Milano and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (IT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
