Adopt Milena

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 4 months

Gender: female, neutered Status: to be placed Milena unfortunately did not have a good past. At the end of the previous year, she was secured together with over 100 other dogs by the veterinary office from a catastrophic husbandry situation and came to an animal shelter. There, she gave birth to 6 puppies within a short time and would not let anyone near her. The colleagues at the animal shelter Freital took in the dog family and Milena was allowed to raise her puppies there. Unfortunately, the female dog was so traumatized that she did not really warm up even after a longer time, would snap if it got too crowded, and was afraid of everyone and everything. The additional stress from high occupancy did not help. The trembling heap of misery needed a new chance and came to us in July. In the last few weeks, she was allowed to arrive here but not to hide in her fear. From the first day, she wore a harness and leash and learned to get to know her environment piece by piece. At first, everything was terrifying, but now she walks joyfully and relaxed and can already handle external stimuli like cars or passersby very well if she can rely on her person. She also shows joy and playfulness and enjoys living together with our male dog Tyler, who gives her a lot of security. People are still suspicious when they are strangers, but she also goes for walks with new people and expands her circle. Stroking from her trusted people finds her wonderful, and she enjoys quiet moments together, although she would not admit it yet. Milena still has a long way to go to become an environmentally stable, lively dog, but in the short time she has already accomplished so much and lives again without constantly being in panic and on the run. She needs people who are as fearlessly as possible but above all sovereign, who give her security but do not pity her or leave her in her fear. Currently, she only manages with the help of always jumping over her shadow, solving small tasks, and not seeking refuge in flight. She needs to be challenged and supported to grow beyond herself. A sovereign dog in the new home would be optimal for her to orient herself by. Milena is looking for a rural quiet environment, and the property must be well secured, because she is constantly searching for an escape route and finds it if necessary. Milena is a challenge that will undoubtedly be worthwhile. We just need the right people for this worn-out dog's soul. Our hearts swell when she suddenly starts being silly or trots happily with her tail up over the meadow. There is no comparison to the beginning.

About Milena

What life with Milena looks like

Milena is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Neu-Amerika in Annaberg-Buchholz.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Milena, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Milena?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Neu-Amerika handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Milena on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Milena if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Neu-Amerika will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Milena already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Milena isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Neu-Amerika early rather than rehoming privately; they know Milena and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
