Milow

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Our Milow originally came from Romania and was rehomed to a family in Germany. They had to surrender him to an animal shelter due to overloading. Since they received no inquiries for the cute guy, we took him in. But even here, there was no success. Nevertheless, Milow is a really great dog. He walks nicely on a leash and trots comfortably by someone’s side. By now, he can pass most dogs without getting upset and shows himself very affectionate to the people he knows. If he knows someone and you handle him calmly and clearly, he will fully trust you. But you have to earn this trust and not be swayed by his initial behavior. Cleaning his paws, checking his ears, and brushing him is then no problem. Only his food is for him high and holy. With us, he has learned: You can only eat from the bowl when it is approved. Approaching him while he is eating and taking away the empty bowl is no problem for familiar, confident people. However, he does not want strangers in his four walls and needs some time to get used to them. Outdoors, he approaches people openly and friendly and likes to get his cuddles. Milow gets along well with female dogs, but with male dogs, it depends on their liking. Milow knows the muzzle, and interested parties should not be afraid to use it. Especially during the adaptation period, he should definitely wear it. For Milow, we are looking for a dog-experienced home without children and cats, where he can be worked with and led through life calmly and consistently. Then, you get an even-tempered, calm, cuddly dog who likes to bask in the sun in a garden. However, the fence should be high enough.

About Milow

What life with Milow looks like

Milow is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Darmstadt in Darmstadt.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Milow, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Milow?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Darmstadt handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Milow on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Milow if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Darmstadt will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Milow already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Milow isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Darmstadt early rather than rehoming privately; they know Milow and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
