Minos

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Minos, a male dog, born around January 2022, with a shoulder height of approximately 55 cm and a weight of around 24 kg (ideal weight would be around 18-20 kg), is looking for a new home. Minos is a handsome male and can initially appear quite impressive. When someone passes by his kennel, he likes to make a loud impression. However, once you get to know him in peace, you quickly realize that behind his imposing appearance is a dog who is insecure and needs time to gain trust. Minos knows little about the world after his long stay in the animal shelter. He needs people who approach him with calmness and patience and give him the opportunity to arrive at his own pace. Haste and pressure do not help him - calm, clear routines and understanding treatment are all the more helpful. If you give him this chance, you will see that he is an absolutely lovely dog who longs for the closeness of humans and simply needs a stable, loving environment to flourish. Minos gets along well with female dogs, and it is possible that he could also get along with male dogs. This would need to be checked more closely if you are interested. He currently lives with Pipina in a kennel. Minos currently weighs about 24 kg - a few kilograms less would be beneficial for him. A tailored diet and a slow, regular muscle build-up are therefore part of the tasks in his new home. Minos is looking for people who are not intimidated by his first impression and are willing to get to know the friendly and sensitive dog behind the big "door". Who will give him this chance? We do not mediate in very urban living situations or in families with young children. Please only submit an adoption request if the takeover is possible at the time mentioned in the text & you have already discussed the adoption of a new family member with your family (if necessary, other involved persons such as employer, landlord, interim care). Please note that the dogs described here are currently in their large care facility or in the animal shelter in a limited, safe environment and have little contact with other people or environmental stimuli outside the property. The descriptions are based on the behavior in this familiar environment. Especially puppies and young dogs are still in the development of their character. For a successful settling in a new home, they need time, patience and loving guidance to get used to the new environment and the various stimuli and grow into confident dogs.

About Minos

What life with Minos looks like

Minos is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Minos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Minos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Minos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Minos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Minos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Minos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Minos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
