Monty

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Monty is a handsome crossbreed who arrived in our care as a stray. Through his microchip we were able to establish that he originally came from Romania. He is approximately 5 years old and, sadly, no one ever came forward to claim him. Monty is a bright boy who is well established in life. He walks nicely on the lead, although he does enjoy a brisk pace and absolutely doesn’t miss a sniff along the way. He would love a home that enjoys getting out and about and exploring the world with him. Monty takes everyday life in his stride and is not bothered by traffic, passing people, or general household and environmental noises. He is a sensible boy who enjoys taking everything in around him, especially if there are plenty of interesting smells to investigate. We do not know what trauma Monty may have experienced before arriving with us, nor how his life began in the Romanian rescue system. Despite this, he has a wonderfully loving nature and will happily rub up against you like a cat when he wants some fuss and scratches. Monty already knows how to sit and give a paw, and he has recently learned the down command. He loves spending time in the garden, happily exploring on his own before checking back in for some affection when the mood takes him. He can be quite an independent boy, but he is very good at letting you know when he would like some human interaction, whether that’s for a walk, a meal, or simply a little company. He also has the best legs in town and moves with a wonderfully elegant trot. Around other dogs, Monty can sometimes be vocal and display slightly stalky Collie like behaviours when he is unsure of what to do. He is easily managed and our behaviour team have been working with him using positive reinforcement and reward based training. He is making fantastic progress and is learning how to engage politely and positively with other dogs. Monty could potentially live with sensible children aged 16+ following successful meets at the centre. He could also potentially share his home with a calm female dog, subject to suitable introductions. We would also be happy to cat test Monty if required, based on introductions carried out at the centre. Training classes would be beneficial to help him maintain a good routine, continue building his confidence, and provide ongoing encouragement as he settles into his new home. Monty is an intelligent boy who enjoys learning and is eager to please, making him a rewarding companion to work with. Monty is looking for an active home with laid back humans who enjoy adventures but also appreciate relaxing in their own space. He would benefit from owners who are willing to continue his training and make learning fun. He is eager to please and, above all else, is a happy go lucky lad who deserves a forever home of his own. About Monty

What life with Monty looks like

Monty is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Cardiff Dogs Home.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Monty, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Monty?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Cardiff Dogs Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Monty on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Monty if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Cardiff Dogs Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Monty already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Monty isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Cardiff Dogs Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Monty and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
