Adopt Myrtle

Mixed Breed · Female

Size:Myrtle weighs about 7kg. Can live with:Myrtle has walked well with other dogs at the shelter and enjoys their company. Although she is friendly with most of them, she he can be a little feisty with some so we feel she would prefer to be the only dog in the home. Myrtle came in on the 26th of January from an unsuitable home. Before this she had spent her entire life locked in shed. Over the last couple of months Myrtle has come on leaps and bounds and is starting to trust humans and enjoy the outside world. She is now ready to find a new home and continue her rehabilitation. Myrtle is a very sweet girl who does enjoy fuss and bell rubs and craves company with her familiar people. The most important factor in Myrtles new home is that it needs to be quiet. She is extremely sound sensitive and would not cope in a busy household. Myrtle is looking for an adult only home and must have a private, very secure garden. We cannot compromise on this as a garden will be key to her development in a home environment. She may not want to live with another dog but would benefit from having canine friends that can support her on her walks as this will be scary for her to begin with. She ideally needs a home with someone who has had some experience of nervous dogs and is prepared to take things at Myrtles pace

About Myrtle

What life with Myrtle looks like

Myrtle is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Myrtle, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Myrtle?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Myrtle on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Myrtle if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Myrtle already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Myrtle isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex early rather than rehoming privately; they know Myrtle and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
