Ralph

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 5 years

Size:Ralph is a large boy who weighs about 52kg. Ralph will ideally need to be the only pet in the home but depending on the circumstances we may consider him living with a large female dog. He has made some female doggie friends since being at the shelter but can be reactive to other males. Ralph came to us at the end of 2021 as his owner could no longer care for him. When he arrived he was very anxious and has required some quite in depth behaviour training. He also had a severe eye condition that impacted his vision and required an operation to fix this. During his time with us Ralph has matured from a worried adolescent into a big, cheeky, young adult. There is still a way to go with Ralph but we are hoping he can continue his training in a new home. Ralph is a very clever boy who loves to learn new things but still has his daft, clumsy moments. He knows sit, down, paw, spin, speak, stay, come, leave, here, kisses and his name on command. He mostly walks well on the lead but can be very strong at times. He loves his toys and travels well in the car. Ralph is very wary of strangers and needs gentle, slow introductions when meeting new people. However, once you have gained his trust he becomes a big, soppy, cuddly boy! Ralph has displayed guarding behaviour around food, mostly at dinner time and occasionally with treats. This has improved hugely since he has arrived but will need careful management in the home. Before applying for Ralph please read the following criteria to see if you would be a good match:- If you think you can offer Ralph the lifestyle he needs and commit to his ongoing training please email the shelter Scroll through the gallery of images above or click to open

About Ralph

What life with Ralph looks like

Ralph is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex in United Kingdom.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Ralph, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Ralph?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Ralph on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Ralph if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Ralph already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Ralph isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA Brighton and the Heart of Sussex early rather than rehoming privately; they know Ralph and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
