Adopt Nanouk

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 5 years

Nanouk is a neutered mixed-breed dog born in October 2020, who was surrendered by his owner to the shelter of our Hungarian partner organization. He has a friendly and gentle nature, but meets strangers with some initial fear and insecurity and needs a bit of time to get used to a new environment. However, he warms up quickly and enjoys receiving affection. He is active and shows remarkable attentiveness and learnability. Due to his initial insecurity, we do not recommend him for families with children. Nanouk previously lived with several other dogs who formed a close-knit pack. In the pack, they felt strong and behaved accordingly. This means that when someone approached, they acted unfriendly and sometimes aggressively. Once the dogs were separated from each other, their behavior changed immediately. Nanouk gets along better with female dog than with dogs. Whether he knows cats and how he reacts to them is not known. He seeks loving and confident people who can provide him with security, consistently lead him, and do not live in the city center. Adequate free time as well as experience in dog care should be present. The dog has a shoulder height of 43 cm and weighs 12 kg.

About Nanouk

What life with Nanouk looks like

Nanouk is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Animal Care Hungary.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇭🇺Adopting from Hungary

Hungarian shelters operate at high capacity given the country's stray population. Animals leave sterilized, chipped, and with a passport. Many shelters coordinate transport to Germany, Austria, and the Nordics.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nanouk, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nanouk?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Animal Care Hungary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nanouk on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nanouk if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Animal Care Hungary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nanouk already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nanouk isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Animal Care Hungary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nanouk and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (HU). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
