Nanuk

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

About 2 years old (born around July 14, 2024) 70 cm, 39.5 kg male, neutered, Leishmaniosetest negative on April 10, 2026 will be retested before travel arrangements. Still in the animal shelter in Spain Nanuk – a gentle giant seeks his home. Nanuk is a beautiful white Swiss German Shepherd with a big heart. People he knows and trusts he embraces warmly, becoming a lifelong loyal friend. Toward strangers, he is initially reserved and cautious, but with a little patience, he quickly wins their trust. With his imposing size, Nanuk is an impressive dog. When he stands up, he looks almost gigantic. Despite his appearance, he is a friendly and even-tempered male dog who gets along well with other dogs and is pleasant on the leash. Health: When Nanuk was taken in at our partner shelter, he had serious injuries on the inner side of his thigh. It seemed he had injured himself while climbing over a fence or some other barrier, possibly on wire or metal. Despite the painful wounds, he endured all treatments patiently and never showed the slightest sign of aggression. Since German Shepherds sometimes develop hip dysplasia (HD) and Nanuk's hind leg seems a bit lower, precautionary X-rays of his hips were taken. The examination, however, brought pleasant certainty: Nanuk shows no signs of hip dysplasia, and his hips are in excellent condition. His background: Nanuk's story began in an unusual way. One morning, a volunteer spotted him aimlessly wandering around her building from the window of her apartment. Several hours later, Maria, the head of our partner shelter, received a call from the nearby animal clinic: a white Swiss German Shepherd had been found near a residential building. It was likely that Nanuk had escaped from an enclosed yard – his injuries might indicate this. Unfortunately, he did not have a microchip, and although his owner was searched for, he was never reported missing. His future home: For Nanuk, we wish for a quiet home with people who will give him time to build trust. With patience, loving guidance, and a few treats, the initially shy male dog will become a loyal companion. Due to his size, Nanuk should not be rehomed with households with small children, as he might accidentally bump into them. But for those seeking a loyal, gentle, and impressive dog by their side, Nanuk will be a wonderful lifelong friend.

Videos Juni 26

About Nanuk

What life with Nanuk looks like

Nanuk is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at home4dogs in Home4dogs.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nanuk, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nanuk?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. home4dogs handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nanuk on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nanuk if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — home4dogs will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nanuk already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nanuk isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with home4dogs early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nanuk and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
