Nellie

Doberman · Female · Puppy · 5 months

Nellie enjoys playing nicely with her toys, eats her food well and already knows a few basic commands, including sit and paw. She will need ongoing positive training and plenty of patience as she develops her confidence and social skills. Nellie currently finds being left alone difficult, so time apart will need to be built up gradually, with suitable enrichment to keep her occupied. She needs to be the only dog in the home as she can be reactive towards other dogs and is currently under-socialised; her new family will need to work positively and carefully on this. Nellie could live with older secondary-school-aged children who are confident around a bouncy, larger dog. Her new family will need to visit her multiple times at the centre to build a bond before she goes home. Nellie is a loving young girl with lots of potential who will thrive with a patient, understanding family willing to help her grow in confidence. Nellie is a very sweet 4-month-old Doberman x German Shepherd who absolutely loves people and enjoys nothing more than cuddles, fuss and attention. She is doing well in kennels, although she can be vocal when things are busy or there is lots going on. As a young puppy, Nellie is still learning about the world and can sometimes feel overwhelmed or unsure when faced with new experiences. She loves exploring and sniffing, but will benefit from having things introduced at her own pace. Nellie is comfortable being clipped on and off by familiar handlers, although she can be nervous with new people initially. Once she gets to know you, she is friendly, wiggly and affectionate, but can become overexcited and jump up. She can also be a little jumpy when being stroked, so continuing to teach her good manners and four paws on the floor will be important.

About Nellie

What life with Nellie looks like

Nellie is a puppy/kitten doberman dog waiting at Dogs Trust Basildon in Wickford.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nellie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nellie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Basildon handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nellie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nellie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Basildon will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nellie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nellie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Basildon early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nellie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
