Adopt Nelly

Female

Nelly had a terrible start to life. When she was a very young pony, she was beaten up by a gang of teenagers and poor Nelly was left so traumatised, she couldn't even bear the sight of people. Her owners, who felt unable to deal with her trauma decided to send Nelly and her friends to the slaughter house. The day before their terrible fate took place, a contact of the owners asked if they could instead go to Willows and fortunately, they agreed. Nelly and her friends arrived safely at the sanctuary and it was painfully obvious to us that she was deeply traumatised and it was going to take a lot of time for her to recover. Many years have gone past and we are now very pleased to report that Nelly is a much happier pony. She is still worried, but she now enjoys being groomed and is always keen to come over for a bucket of feed! She was once such a frightened pony but now she grazes the fields with her friends without a care in the world. Please consider becoming her sponsor.

About Nelly

What life with Nelly looks like

Nelly is a adult horse waiting at Willows Animal Sanctuary in United Kingdom.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nelly, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nelly?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Willows Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nelly on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nelly if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Willows Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nelly already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nelly isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Willows Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nelly and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
