Adopt Nelson

Giant Schnauzer · Male · Young · 2 years

Nelson is not rehomed through RiesenSchnauzerNothilfe e.V., but through: Adoptadog e.V. Nelson: Wirbelwind with a big heart Nelson once had a home. Unfortunately, his owner could no longer take care of him – and so this big, lively fellow came to us at the shelter. Despite everything, Nelson has not lost his zest for life and joy. He is an energetic, curious dog who loves to run around the playground, explore the world, and hold his nose to the wind on walks. For Nelson, movement is pure joy! At the same time, he shows friendliness, openness, and strength – a true character dog with a big heart. Nelson is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and dewormed. Nelson is about 67 cm tall and an impressive RiesenSchnauzer-Mix – powerful, smart, and full of temperament. With clear guidance, loving consistency, and enough mental stimulation, he will be a wonderful companion for active people who appreciate his energy. Who adopts Nelson gets not just a dog who is simply "there" – but a lifelong friend who makes every day a little adventure with enthusiasm and joy. Nelson is suitable for families, only for dog-experienced people, compatible with male dogs, and compatible with female dogs. For more information, photos, and videos about Nelson, visit our website. When this dog arrives at your home, please give him time to settle in. Much will be new to him. That’s why he wants to learn the dog ABCs together with your help and patience, like going up stairs, using the bathroom outside, or walking on a leash. A good dog training class (where shelter dogs are also welcome) can help you. Joint training also strengthens your bond and trust in each other. We only know the dogs from the animal shelter and usually do not know whether they are compatible with cats or other animals. We cannot guarantee this, so a meeting should be done very carefully. We are happy to support you from the beginning. If you are interested in Nelson, have a loving spot available, and are ready for everything that comes with it, then send us a message: Our volunteer coordinators will get in touch with you as soon as possible. We are there for you before and after adoption, answering your questions, and providing you with all the important documents and information about the dog. The listed characteristics serve as orientation and are based on the assessment of the dogs at the animal shelter. In a new, unfamiliar environment, a dog’s behavior can differ. The breed description is usually only a first assessment, mainly based on appearance, and gives only limited indications about the nature of the animal. For more information, talk to our coordinators. Gets along with other dogs.

About Nelson

What life with Nelson looks like

Nelson is a large young adult giant schnauzer dog waiting at Riesenschnauzer Nothilfe e.V. in Germany.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nelson, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nelson?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Riesenschnauzer Nothilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nelson on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nelson if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Riesenschnauzer Nothilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nelson already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nelson isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Riesenschnauzer Nothilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nelson and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
