Nelson

Male · Young · 3 years

Meet Nelson, our handsome little lad! Nelson is a sweet and sensitive lad who has formed strong bonds with his handlers during his time with us. He enjoys the company of people he knows well, loves a cuddle on his own terms and is happiest exploring the world with his nose to the ground. Although he can be a little worried by new situations, Nelson has shown that with patience and reassurance he can grow in confidence and be responsive to commands. Nelson is looking for owners with previous dog experience that can provide him with on-going training and management in situations such as when meeting other dogs, being left alone and handling. He would thrive in a multi-carer household where everyone can share his care and help him settle gradually into his new routine. Nelson can be selective about the dogs he chooses to spend time with, making some canine friends with similar natured dogs. However, he has previously competed for attention with another dog in the home and would be happiest as the only dog, where he can enjoy all of the love and attention for himself. Nelson will need a cat and small animal free home due to his history of chasing cats, birds and rabbits. Nelson would be best suited to living in an adult only home due to his handling sensitivities so that his boundaries can be respected as he doesn't enjoy being picked up or overhandled. As a true terrier type, Nelson is looking for a home with his own secure space for zoomies and playtime, as well as training away from distractions. Nelson is a lovely little character with so much to offer. He will need patient owners who are happy to continue building his confidence around other dogs, support him with gradually increasing the time he spends alone and respect his sensitive nature. In return, they will gain a loyal, affectionate and rewarding companion who will flourish with the right guidance and understanding. About Nelson

What life with Nelson looks like

Nelson is a small young adult dog waiting at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nelson, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nelson?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nelson on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nelson if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nelson already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nelson isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nelson and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
