Adopt Nessun rischio Cov-2 da cani e gatti

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 4 months

Some days ago, the news spread that on February 28th, Hong Kong authorities reported that traces of the SARS-CoV-2 virus were found on the oral and nasal mucosa of a dog belonging to a woman infected with the virus. A news too tempting not to be turned into a new alarm, fueling the concern of that part of society that has given up on scientific truths, overwhelmed by irrationality and panic. In some areas of China, alongside measures banning the consumption of dog meat (and other exotic species, perhaps starting a new "cultural" phase that would ban medieval practices), there is also a block on the circulation of dogs and cats in public and even urgent calls for their elimination, forgetting that companion animals did not contribute to the outbreak of SARS in 2002-2003 (Peter J. Li, Chinese policy expert at Humane Society International). In fact, the Hong Kong dog does not show symptoms of the disease - says our National Institute of Health - and there are absolutely no proofs showing that animals such as dogs or cats can be infected by SARS-CoV-2, nor that they can be a source of infection for humans. Another confirmation that today the transmission of Covid-19 is only human-to-human came from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention) in Atlanta, which also reminded that there are no cases of sick animals in the world, but only one case of a positive animal without signs of illness. Therefore, there has been no species jump, and according to what was stated today by the director of the Food Safety, Nutrition and Public Veterinary Health Department of the National Institute of Health to "Repubblica," "it is likely that the woman infected the dog and that the virus is present in the dog's mucosa as on plates or napkins used." The truth, therefore, seems to be one and only: at the moment, each of us has his own coronaviruses! Because, for example, coronavirus infections in cats are very common and usually cause only mild diarrhea; only if it mutates it causes feline infectious peritonitis (FIP), a very serious disease but not transmissible to people or other pets. And dogs also have their own coronavirus, causing an acute gastrointestinal disease (gastroenteritis), mainly spread through infected feces, which more easily affects puppies, but can affect dogs of any age, but does not transmit to humans. Here is the advice of health authorities: anyone who has been infected with SARS-CoV-2 should wear a mask and wash hands when coming into contact with dogs and cats, because the risk is that we fill them with "our" coronavirus!
