Nikander

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Native Country: Hungary Nikander is a charming dog who became an additional resident of Menhelys in Kecskemét on March 13, 2026. He came from Nagykörös and lived there with Tuan, Filippa, Hanka, Rukkola, their puppies Roden, Remus, Rami, Roza, Raya, and Rayman, as well as Britni and Makrina on a completely littered piece of land. The owner was evidently overwhelmed with his own life and could not do justice to the dogs. The four-legged creatures were seized and entrusted to the animal shelter. Capturing them was not easy; there were many hiding spots. Some of the dogs were not so fearful and could be secured on the first day, but for the others, live traps were set up. Thankfully, all were eventually secured and are waiting in the animal shelter for their second chance. Nikander unfortunately does not feel very comfortable in the animal shelter; the noise, the hustle and bustle, and the stress scare him very much. He is, after all, a rather shy dogman, and his previous life has not been optimal. In the animal shelter, he is learning that there are also good people, and he does not need to be afraid. Slowly, Nikander is building trust with the animal caretakers, opening up a little more each day, and becoming more curious and open-minded. He is also finding a liking to cuddles, something he simply did not know before, and he does not want to miss out on this anymore. Nikander is of course still very inexperienced and his new people must, at the right time, lovingly and patiently teach him everything necessary that a young dog needs to know for his future life. He gets along well with his fellow animals, and a confident second dog could be a great help to him in settling into his new life. For our heartwarming and sensitive Nikander, we are searching for loving and dog-experienced people who can provide him with enough love, understanding, empathy, time, and patience, giving him security, strengthening his self-confidence, and giving him the chance to make his disappointed soul happy and joyful again. Nikander will surely soon realize how beautiful life with loving people can be and will open his heart to be a great and faithful companion. Nikander just needs the opportunity to show what is in him. Upon arrival at the animal shelter, Nikander had a broken tooth, which was extracted. 05.05.2026: Nikander has a home in Germany via Ga4dogs.

Bitte keinen Fragebogen an animal-happyend senden. About Nikander

What life with Nikander looks like

Nikander is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Animal Happyend in Animal Happyend.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nikander, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nikander?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Animal Happyend handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nikander on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nikander if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Animal Happyend will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nikander already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nikander isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Animal Happyend early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nikander and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
