over: 🍀 Other dogs: yes, great babysitter for puppies/junior dogs Other animals: no, prey drive Children: knows them, but very stormy Dog experience: experience in behavior correction Problems: insecure, defends sleeping places and food Special: Typical of the breed independent and self-reliant Preferred husbandry: suited for a farm dog, outdoors (feels very uncomfortable in the house) Hello dog friends, I am Niko and I am looking for a home with dog-experienced people. With my trusted people, I am a nice and well-mannered dog. While on walks, I do pull on the leash, but that's something we can work on together. 😉 My biggest problem is that I am very territorial in the house. I defend pretty much everything - furniture, rooms, food, and more - even against my own people. So you see, I am not a dog for everyone. I need dog-experienced people by my side who can work on this behavior with me. ☝🏻 In the yard, I am super social and have no issues with resource defense. I do not necessarily need to be rehomed into a living room or can have limited access to the house, but of course with family connection. As I am super social with other animals, I would love to have one or more dog buddies in my new home. Here at the animal shelter, I have already proven myself as a "puppy daddy," being very tolerant of puppies and junior dogs and showing them the world. 😊 The best fit would be as a guard dog or with a musher. Somewhere where I can be myself and not confined. 🙏🏼 🔜 Will you take on the challenge and give a great guy like me a chance? Then get in touch. 💜 See you soon, Your Niko PS: In Germany, yard keeping is allowed, but certain criteria must be met. Niko is a dog who does not feel comfortable or relaxed in a household space. He prefers to spend time outdoors with other dogs, where he feels most at ease and happy. While not ideal, it is better than having to live without a family for a dog who has had negative experiences with life in the house. Niko has already been placed in a few households, but each time it has failed. He simply does not feel comfortable in this model, and we do not want to discuss it further. 😌 Does this apply to you? Then send

About Niko

What life with Niko looks like

Niko is a medium-sized adult dog waiting at Tierheim Stuttgart in Stuttgart.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Resource guarding behavior in indoor environments, territorial aggression, requires outdoor/kennel living arrangement

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Niko, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Niko?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Stuttgart handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Niko on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Niko if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Stuttgart will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Niko already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Niko isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Stuttgart early rather than rehoming privately; they know Niko and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
