adoption requirements adoption process Adopt this animal now! adoption requirements adoption process Found a home for Nilo! His story: Nilo and his two brothers, Johannes and Rolf, had a tough start in life. Someone simply abandoned the three small male dogs in the mountains. There, they were found and saved by our volunteer animal rescuer Tina. Now they are at the public shelter in Bistrita and are waiting for a forever home. Nilo, at 4 to 5 months old, has shown so far to be rather calm and cautious but friendly. He gets along well with other dogs, and he is also compatible with cats. However, he is initially a bit reserved around people, which is not surprising given his history. With time, he will surely become a loyal companion. But there is still a lot for him to learn. So, in a new home, he will need to learn the small dog multiplication table, be house-trained, and gradually practice being alone. His new owners should also be prepared for puberty, as it can quickly undo all that he has learned. Given his short, rough coat, it is suspected that a terrier might be in Nilo's lineage – he could therefore have a certain prey drive. Anything that moves could be exciting for the small, light-brown male dog. He is one of the smaller breeds and is expected to reach a height of 25 to 30 cm when fully grown, with a weight between 5 and 10 kg. This makes him the perfect size to be everywhere. Nilo will be microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for fleas for his travel arrangements. Due to his age, he is not yet neutered. He will also have his EU pet passport in his luggage. A foster home would also be a great help for him. A big thank you to Hannah – you gave Nilo his name and helped him take an important step towards a better life. As of: 14.09.

About Nilo

What life with Nilo looks like

Nilo is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nilo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nilo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nilo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nilo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nilo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nilo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nilo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
