Nils

Chihuahua · Male · Puppy · 10 months

Nils came to us as a found dog. He was very shy at first, but he is developing and becoming bolder every day. The male dog tends to be uncertain around strangers and greets them skeptically with barking, while he is friendly and open-minded with people he trusts. Nils is very food-motivated. This makes him easily distracted or enthusiastic about learning new things. This is a good thing, because he has already gained weight well since his arrival and no longer looks so skinny. However, he should not be placed with small children, as he tends to defend his food due to his uncertainty - a topic that also needs to be worked on in the new home. The male dog needs a clear, safe framework in which he can move to gradually build more self-confidence. For this reason, he should also live in a quiet, rural environment - in the city he would be completely overwhelmed by the many stimuli at the moment. Nils cannot be left alone yet, this would have to be built up step by step. He gets along well with other dogs, which is why he would like to move to an existing first dog. Nils is not a dog for beginners. He needs people with dog experience and authority who can offer him guidance. Once he has gained trust, he enjoys petting, likes to cuddle and is up for any fun. Of course, he still needs to learn the little dog basics. If his new people enjoy training with him, they will be rewarded with a clever and loyal little dog companion!

DE·Show original

About Nils

What life with Nils looks like

Nils is a puppy/kitten chihuahua dog waiting at Tierheim Neuwied in Neuwied.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nils, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nils?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Neuwied handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nils on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nils if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Neuwied will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nils already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nils isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Neuwied early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nils and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
