Nilson

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 9 years

Nilson could be rehomed together with brother Nils to patient cat lovers on April 14, 2017. Much success with further stroking training… …………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. My name is Nilson. I am male, neutered, and born in 2016. I have been waiting since January 2017 for a new home. My caretakers say about me: Nilson is an intake from a garden colony of cats, where cat lovers or enthusiasts with patience are sought for adoption, because Nils is not really wild. The cat family was fed when the kittens grew up and winter approached, and we came into play. Unfortunately, like so often too late, we would have been adopted earlier if we had been brought in when the cats were still small, as they would have adapted to humans more easily. Nevertheless, Nilson has developed well during his quarantine period, and during feeding, a cautious petting is allowed. In everyday life, he shows himself to be open and interested after getting used to his surroundings, so we assume that he can develop trust in a quiet home with patience quite quickly. An appropriate adaptation period must also be factored into the new home. Nilson does not want to be pressured, we recommend hand-feeding and practicing how pleasant cuddling with a human hand can be. Since he has already experienced such training and accepted the first cuddles, it is simply a matter of trust and patience that one must bring with adoption. He gets along excellently with other animals, and Nilson can happily move in as a second cat. Ideally, with one of his brothers or Mama. Who would like to give Nilson the chance to finally win his trust in his own home, which he will then surely only share with his new owner… The descriptions are impressions and photos of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. Each animal can develop differently in the new home. The descriptions are impressions and photos of the animal in our animal shelter and our foster homes. About Nilson

What life with Nilson looks like

Nilson is a small adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nilson, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nilson?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nilson on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nilson if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nilson already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nilson isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nilson and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
