Oakley

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 1 year

Oakley is an unneutered mixed-breed male dog, born in April 2025, and unfortunately a prime example of good intentions not always leading to good outcomes. The young male dog came to us as a surrendered pet because his previous owners were completely overwhelmed by him. Boundaries, rules, structure, or clear guidance? None of these were present. Instead, there was an abundance of freedom and little direction. Oakley was allowed to simply "do as he pleased" when he was a cute puppy – and now that is coming back to haunt him. With the upcoming addition to the family, it became clear that the sweet puppy had turned into an insecure, overly familiar, and completely disoriented young dog, who is simply overwhelmed by many situations. Anything that makes him uncomfortable is initially met with aggression. However, if his counterpart does not back down, it quickly becomes apparent: behind the big facade lies primarily insecurity. Then Oakley sits there – bewildered, overwhelmed, and without a plan for how to actually deal with the world. Oakley has never learned to orient himself to people or to handle frustration. Structure and reliability are foreign concepts to him. We are now working step by step to catch up on this. Despite everything, we do not see a "hopeless problem dog" in him, but a young dog who finally needs clear rules, security, and reliable guidance. Of course, this will not be a walk in the park. Oakley comes with work, and his future humans should be prepared to work with him consistently and patiently. People with dog experience would definitely be advantageous here. His new family should also enjoy helping a young dog understand the world, rather than just letting him "run loose." A certain prey drive is also present – which wouldn't surprise us if there is indeed Beagle in him. We are optimistic that Oakley can learn to navigate our world appropriately.

About Oakley

What life with Oakley looks like

Oakley is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oakley, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oakley?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oakley on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oakley if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oakley already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oakley isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oakley and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
