Olaf &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male

Olaf is in our care due to his classification as a dangerous dog under the Dangerous Dog Ordinance, and special husbandry requirements must be met. He came from poor husbandry conditions, having passed through the hands of several owners before the last one, after multiple injuries caused by Olaf, reported the matter to the authorities, and Olaf eventually made his way to us. Olaf poses serious threats in certain situations, so only an arrangement in cooperation and consultation with the responsible authority, where Olaf has the chance for re-socialization, is in question. He needs a chance; he is still young and lacks the necessary experience, time, and appropriate training to prepare Olaf for a second life. Direct human-dog contact is currently not possible due to reasons rooted in his past. Olaf is subject to strict safety measures, and we still want to advocate for him and seek a solution, as re-socialization spaces are naturally in short supply. The request is made in consultation with the responsible authority, and we will reach out or forward any suggestions, ideas, or inquiries. Olaf generally barks at strangers and visitors, but he greets his caregivers and familiar people joyfully. In the run, Olaf generally behaves neutrally towards fellow animals, though some male companions are commented on. The process of letting him in and out has been smooth since the training phase began, and he obediently follows instructions. The available activities are naturally limited, and Olaf is not fully engaged. Perhaps Olaf still has a chance, and we can find a suitable placement together where he can learn the boundaries that should not be crossed and find a responsible home in the long term….

DE·Show original

About Olaf &#8211

What life with Olaf &#8211 looks like

Olaf &#8211 is a adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Olaf &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Olaf &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Olaf &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Olaf &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Olaf &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Olaf &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Olaf &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
