Adopt Onix

Male · Puppy · 5 months

Onix – a young Bardino-mixed breed is seeking an active home. Onix originally came from a shelter on the Canary Islands (Spain) and is now looking for a suitable home. His parents are known, so it is expected that Onix will grow to a larger size when fully grown. He is a Bardino-mixed breed. Bardinos are herding and guard dogs. These dogs were originally used to drive cattle herds and to gather them according to the shepherd’s instructions. Accordingly, they are characterized by high mobility, endurance, and speed. Typical for the phenotype are an athletic, somewhat wiry build, a pronounced attention span, as well as a watchful, independent nature. For Onix, we are looking for an active home with people who enjoy movement, mental stimulation, and consistent training. He is suitable for both ambitious beginners who are willing to delve into the needs of a herding dog mix and for dog-experienced individuals – especially those with experience in handling herding or German Shepherd types. Important are sufficient time, patience, and the willingness to challenge Onix both physically and mentally. Character-wise, Onix shows similarities to his sister, albeit in a slightly milder form. He also brings a certain amount of self-confidence and tests his limits with fellow animals, showing overall a more balanced nature. He is socially compatible with other dogs but also requires clear and consistent leadership to develop well. Toward people, Onix is friendly, approachable, and cuddly. However, as a puppy, Onix is still at the very beginning of his development. Walking on a leash, living in the home, and basic training rules must still be built up and reinforced carefully. Whether Onix is compatible with cats is currently being tested. An update on this will follow shortly.

About Onix

What life with Onix looks like

Onix is a puppy/kitten dog waiting at BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr in Germany.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onix, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onix?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onix on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onix if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Onix already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onix isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with BMT Tierheim Arche Noah Stuhr early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onix and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
