Onyx

Labrador Retriever · Male · Senior · 9 years

Onyx is a 9-year-old Labrador mix looking for a forever home where he can simply be a dog. ❤️ Onyx is an incredibly sweet, cuddly guy who enjoys being close to his people. At the same time, he is a dog with character and clear boundaries. He makes it very clear when something is uncomfortable and communicates his boundaries well. His future people should therefore have experience with dogs, be attentive and able to read him. Onyx does not allow certain things, such as controlling his mouth or touching his paws. For situations where this is necessary, he needs a muzzle. The muzzle should of course be positively built up and established in everyday life. Onyx was diagnosed with epilepsy. He copes very well with his medication and needs it twice a day. His new people should be willing to give his medication reliably and adjust to his special needs. We wish for Onyx: • a quiet home without children • dog-experienced people who understand his body language and respect his boundaries • people who have enough time for him • people who enjoy being active with him and physically and mentally exhausting him • a home where he does not have to constantly function, but is accepted with his quirks Despite his special needs, Onyx is above all one: a sweet, loyal and very cuddly dog who can give his people a lot in return. We are looking for people who are willing to engage with Onyx, understand his language and build a harmonious relationship with him together. Onyx is not looking for perfect people - but the right ones. If you are seriously interested, we look forward to a detailed message in which you introduce yourself and your life situation.

About Onyx

What life with Onyx looks like

Onyx is a large senior labrador retriever dog waiting at Tierheim Düsseldorf in Düsseldorf.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Onyx, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Onyx?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Düsseldorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Onyx on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Onyx if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Düsseldorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Onyx already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Onyx isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Düsseldorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Onyx and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
