Adopt Costa

German Shepherd · Male · Senior · 9 years

Tierausweis Das bin ich! Lust auf ein Treffen? Werde mein Pate! Name: Costa Rasse: German Shepherd-Labrador-Mix Geschlecht: männlich neutered Gewicht: 42 Kilogramm Alter: 2017 Im animal shelter seit: 08.02.2022 We thank all the sponsors for their support: Lena E., Hedwig C. Costa is very people-oriented, loves full attention, cuddle hours on the sofa, and joint walks with his people. Together with his sister Nala, he came to the animal shelter from poor husbandry conditions; upon intake, he was significantly overweight and had itchy eczema. Even today, he tends to have bald spots, which is why he regularly receives medications. The funny guy, who is also very open to strangers and goes on walks regularly, shows a friendly attitude towards children in the animal shelter. In the car, he travels calmly. In indoor areas, he behaves house-trained. The basic obedience commands are familiar to Costa. However, it can become tricky when he encounters other dogs on walks. He may try to wrestle with full body involvement and show partial rear-directed aggression towards his leash handler, which manifests as snapping. We secure him with a muzzle, which he accepts without issue. If the person is confident and guides Costa through such situations, he shows a much more relaxed demeanor and is manageable. Further training in this regard is, however, urgently needed. Further work should be done at home to help Costa develop inner calm, so that he can also learn to relax and not constantly have to keep everything in his sight. Toward other dogs, Costa has shown relative openness after the initial excitement. However, his initial impulse is very physical, so his counterpart should be larger and stronger. With mutual liking, he could potentially become a second dog.

Tierausweis Das bin ich! Lust auf ein Treffen? Werde mein Pate!

About Costa

What life with Costa looks like

Costa is a senior german shepherd dog waiting at Name in Bad Karlshafen.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Costa, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Costa?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Name handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Costa on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Costa if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Name will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Costa already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Costa isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Name early rather than rehoming privately; they know Costa and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
