Adopt ORNI

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

Estimated birth date: January 2021 Brief info: friendly, cuddly, curious, still shy with men, family+, teenager+, female dogs+, male dogs+ The male dog ORNI was found on the street at the beginning of December 2023 and the animal shelter was notified. However, it was impossible to catch the frightened male dog. Eventually, he was caught after a few days by setting a live trap, in which the hungry ORNI fell. In the animal shelter, the handsome hound was still so fearful in the early weeks that it was impossible to approach him in the enclosure, let alone touch him. So, the caretaker Monika took a special interest in him and worked patiently to earn his trust. This worked so well that now even strangers can take ORNI for walks. However, it must be said that ORNI is still very shy and fearful of men at the moment, while he no longer fears women. This may change over time, as he initially feared everyone. It is suspected that ORNI lived with a man who likely showed him the darker side of humanity, and we do not want to know what he experienced. Once ORNI trusts someone, he is a wonderful and very nice companion. With his fellow animals, it depends on their sympathy, but here too, he likely had little contact with other dogs in the past and needs more routine. We hope that this extremely lovable male dog finds a loving and dog-experienced home where he can finally experience how wonderful a "dog life" can be. He has earned it so much and will repay every effort made for him a thousand times over. There should be a female primary caregiver in the new home. ORNI will move to a neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and EU-pet passport-equipped new home. Has this dear fellow captured your heart? Then we look forward to your message!

About ORNI

What life with ORNI looks like

ORNI is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Pfotenretter Ungarn in Pfotenretter.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇨🇭Adopting from Switzerland

Swiss shelters require a home visit (Platzkontrolle) and proof of suitable accommodation. Cantons each have their own additional dog-keeping requirements (e.g. SKN training in some areas). Animals leave sterilized and chipped.

Frequently asked

Adopting ORNI, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about ORNI?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Pfotenretter Ungarn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw ORNI on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt ORNI if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Pfotenretter Ungarn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is ORNI already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if ORNI isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Pfotenretter Ungarn early rather than rehoming privately; they know ORNI and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
