Oscar

Male · Senior · 12 years

Oscar is a sweet senior gent who will faithfully bond with the people he spends time with the most. When you first meet him, he may appear aloof but once you are besties he will come and snuggle with you on the sofa, sit on your lap, and soak up all the fuss on offer. Oscar enjoys toy play, he likes soft toys, squeaky toys, and chasing after a ball. Oscar will make you laugh when he gets the zoomies around the home! Oscar enjoys his walks on the beaches and in the countryside. He does not mind walking through a muddy puddle or dipping his paws in water. He would benefit from having calm, gentle dogs who will ignore him to walk alongside to build up his confidence with being around other dogs. He likes dog biscuits and meaty sticks as a reward. He has good recall, and he knows a paw and wait. We introduce to you twelve-year-old Oscar the mini-Dachshund. He is looking for a new home. Since he has excellent history around young children, he can share his home with upper preschool aged children. He is nervous around other dogs and is looking to be the only dog in the home. He has no history around cats, small furries, or livestock. Oscar is housetrained; he will let you know when he needs to go so you will need to watch for his cues. He travels well in the car. Oscar could cope with a reasonably busy home environment. He does not like being left alone at home and is looking for as much company as possible. Time left alone will need to be built up gradually.

About Oscar

What life with Oscar looks like

Oscar is a small senior dog waiting at Dogs Trust Ilfracombe in Ilfracombe.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oscar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oscar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Ilfracombe handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oscar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oscar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Ilfracombe will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oscar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oscar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Ilfracombe early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oscar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
