Otto &#8211

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 10 years

Otto is 10 years old (as of 01/2025) and a lovable Bodeguero grandpa. The affectionate senior would rather sit on the lap of the animal welfare workers and be spoiled. Otto is a cuddle champion of the special class; he loves people, he is still curious and playful – and that it is so is a clear miracle. Otto was found on the Autobahn in May 2024. A kind truck driver stopped on the shoulder to save the small dog he had noticed out of the corner of his eye. When the brave rescuer realized Otto’s condition, he immediately informed the animal welfare workers and brought his protégé to the animal clinic. Our terrier grandpa was covered in wounds and had a severe infection in his ears due to grannen. These are classic injuries that an abandoned household pet can suffer when left helpless – but what became visible on the X-ray made our friends concerned and sad (even though they had seen similar things before…). Otto had shot pellets in his head and throughout his body, some of which could be removed, while others had to remain where they were – but our brave fighter has no pain and has recovered well since living in the care of our partners at ArcoNatura. Our lovable cuddle fan now waits to be seen by someone who will give him a comfortable life. Otto just wants people who will spoil him, take him for leisurely walks around the neighborhood, share their bread when Otto sets his prettiest doggy gaze, and hold plenty of soft cushions and warm cuddle blankets that invite long shared TV-watching sessions on a comfortable couch. Our grey-nosed friends still have so much to give, but they are often overlooked. We wish for and with Otto that he does not become one of the many dogs who, abandoned by their own people, must eventually die in the yard – on concrete and behind bars.

About Otto &#8211

What life with Otto &#8211 looks like

Otto &#8211 is a small senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Otto &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Otto &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Otto &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Otto &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Otto &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Otto &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Otto &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
