Pancho

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

Our 6-year-old (as of 07/26) Water Dog male, Pancho, is looking for people who have a soft spot for curly originals and aren't fooled by the fact that right now he looks more like a freshly polished seal. His coat has just been completely shaved because, unfortunately, it hadn't received the care it needed before. This isn't a cosmetic flaw—it's a fresh start. The curls are growing back, and with them, hopefully, too, Pancho’s confidence in a life where someone regularly thinks about brush, scissors, patience, and treats. Pancho was taken from his family by local authorities because his humans were unable to provide for him due to difficult life circumstances. When he arrived at the shelter run by our partner organization, Dolmen Animal, he was severely neglected, unkempt, and barely socialized. The fact that he’s remained so friendly and has adjusted remarkably well in foster care says a lot about this dog. Apparently, Pancho has decided that life could still be a pretty good idea—provided the right people are on board. Water Dogs are intelligent, alert, and often highly people-oriented dogs. They’ve been—and still are in Spain today—valued as working and service dogs, and it’s clear they love having something to do. Pancho isn’t the kind of dog who just lies decoratively on the sofa. He observes, thinks along, wants to belong, and delights in people who calmly and lovingly show him how wonderful shared adventures can be. His activity level is rather moderate for a dog of his breed, but he’s far from content with the “three Cs”—cuddling, clowning around, and cookies. Pancho is attentive, interested, and very affectionate toward people—even if at first he sometimes needs a little time to check whether his new companion really has good intentions. Once he warms up, though, he reveals himself to be a friendly fellow who has handled the transition into his new life remarkably well. At this point, it’s also worth briefly mentioning that Water Dogs are often described as hypoallergenic—but that’s not a promise with a bow on top. Not everyone reacts the same way, and not every dog is automatically suitable for allergy sufferers. And don’t underestimate the importance of coat care either. Water Dogs shed hardly at all, much like Poodles—but precisely because of this, dead hair tends to get trapped in their coats, can mat, and eventually become really uncomfortable. So anyone who thinks a non-shedding dog is automatically easy to care for will be gently—but firmly—disabused of that notion by Pancho and others like him. Pancho is looking for a home that chooses him not just for his pretty breed or his curls that will soon be shining in all their glory again, but for his true character. He needs people who can give him security, guide him kindly, keep him mentally stimulated, and see grooming as a loving ritual. Then the little shaved charmer will once again become a Water Dog with style, wit, heart—and curls. Pancho doesn’t bring a perfect past with him, but he does bring a whole lot of future. And he’d love most of all to share that future with people who understand that trust, just like a haircut, sometimes takes time to grow back.

DE·Show original

About Pancho

What life with Pancho looks like

Pancho is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pancho, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pancho?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pancho on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pancho if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pancho already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pancho isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pancho and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
