Paul

German Shorthaired Pointer · Male · Adult · 5 years

Achtung, here comes Paul! With full force and enthusiasm, he jumps right into your heart! Paul is a March 2021-born, intact, German Shorthair (Mix) and brings a lot of enthusiasm and good mood, which still needs to be channeled in the right direction. The young fellow is a super smart brain and wants to be engaged accordingly. Walks alone would not make the clever boy or his new owners happy, as Paul would probably look for other forms of activity (not very conducive to household peace, of course). Paul found his way to us from another animal shelter. There, they have already started Man- and Pettrailing with him. As a hunting dog, this is incredibly valuable and meaningful for Paul and brings him a lot of joy. He should also be physically exhausted, but it is essential to pay attention to a balanced ratio. If Paul is not braked and not given the opportunity to rest, he would (still) overdo it and keep going and going. The pause button was apparently forgotten to be considered in his previous upbringing. We are working on Paul learning not to be in charge all the time, not to feel responsible for everything, and not to control everything. Paul is well-behaved with other dogs and shows good social behavior. He can be a bit pushy and sometimes over-excited, but he responds very well to both canine and human speech, takes commands very well, and can react very finely to them. However, a provocative male dog can trigger a counter-reaction, and even the nice Paul can become a macho. So far, he has not shown any inappropriate behavior. Paul is very attached to resources, especially when it comes to food. In the shelter, he eats politely only after release and does not dispute food with people as long as they claim it. However, if he has claimed something for himself and is asked to give it up, he may also assert his will with his teeth. This is being worked on with him. Due to this fact, Paul will not be placed with children.

Achtung hier kommt Paul!

About Paul

What life with Paul looks like

Paul is a large adult german shorthaired pointer dog waiting at Tierheim Burgdorf in Burgdorf.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Paul, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Paul?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Burgdorf handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Paul on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Paul if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Burgdorf will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Paul already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Paul isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Burgdorf early rather than rehoming privately; they know Paul and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
