Peter & Knödel

British Shorthair · Male · Young · 3 years

Peter and Knödel came from an animal hoarding incident into our care. We are now seeking a loving home for the brave fluffy bears. Both are described as reserved and shy - no surprise, given their traumatic past. As Peter and Knödel provide each other much support, we only offer them for adoption together. There should be no children in their future home, to avoid too much commotion for the two. However, they would greatly appreciate a cozy scratching post. As Knödel had dental problems in the past, veterinary check-ups should be done annually, or more frequently if needed. These animals are the result of breeding with a representative of a breed that is considered a "Qualzucht" - a breed that has been bred for extreme physical characteristics that can lead to behavioral problems and physical suffering. According to § 11b of the Animal Welfare Act, breeding such animals is forbidden. A characteristic of this breed is the genetically induced extreme shortening of the facial skull. This leads to a narrowing of the upper airways and the tear duct, inward turning of the eyelid edge, as well as underbite, overbite and crossbite, which can make eating extremely difficult. The wide skull makes natural birth difficult. If the animals suffer due to their anatomy, it is considered a "Qualzucht". As advocates for the animals, we reject such breeding. Pet owners who support such breeding act irresponsibly.

About Peter & Knödel

What life with Peter & Knödel looks like

Peter & Knödel is a young adult british shorthair cat waiting at Hamburger Tierschutzverein in Hamburg.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Peter & Knödel, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Peter & Knödel?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Hamburger Tierschutzverein handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Peter & Knödel on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Peter & Knödel if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Hamburger Tierschutzverein will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Peter & Knödel already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Peter & Knödel isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Hamburger Tierschutzverein early rather than rehoming privately; they know Peter & Knödel and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
