Petra &#8211

Mixed Breed · Female

Petra, our two-and-a-half-year-old (as of 11/25) running wonder, came into the care of our friends at the small shelter Kimba with three other new rescues. The dogs were to be transported from a small perrera to the capital. There, different rules apply than in the rural facilities, where the dogs may not always receive medical care but at least get food and stay … well, until the kennels are full, then they also end up in the room from which no one returns. In the large perreras, however, there are time regulations. If a dog is not picked up, taken over by an animal protection organization, or adopted within 14 or 30 days, it will be euthanized, regardless of age or health condition. Therefore, the animal welfare workers in Spain do everything they can to take in the animals that are to be relocated for cost reasons, even if it goes far beyond their capacities. The new arrivals were a real surprise for our friends, because the quartet has found its trust in humanity (again) in the shortest time, shows itself charming and open to the world – and for that reason, all the gang members will soon get their ticket to great happiness, we hope at least very much. When the raven-black Galgo Petra entered the animal shelter, she was covered in wounds. Whether this happened during her escape from a galguero, whether she was attacked by other street dogs, or whether she was injured in traffic – we cannot say. Our friends have cared for the injured greyhound with dedication, and today all of that is just a bad memory (and Petra is the first to only care about the present). Our black beauty with her gentle nature has quickly snuggled into the hearts of the animal welfare workers. Petra is very people-oriented and gets along well with children. She likes the contact with other dogs, learns in the animal shelter to be a young, fear-free dog, to play and frolic – and how to make cookies appear in pockets. Petra is still unfamiliar with life in a house, but she will surely learn at record speed what it means with soft cushions, sofas, warm jackets in winter (our sprint stars are all quite frostbitten), long cozy TV sessions, and shared adventures. Petra is smart, loving, and attentive – and more than ready for her life as a family princess.

DE·Show original

About Petra &#8211

What life with Petra &#8211 looks like

Petra &#8211 is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Petra &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Petra &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Petra &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Petra &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Petra &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Petra &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Petra &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
