Adopt Pluto

Mixed Breed · Male · Young · 3 years

Pluto is a young, unneutered male dog who came to us at the our shelter as an administrative referral after there were uncertainties in his previous environment, particularly regarding rules and interactions with children. He has only been with us for a short time, but the first impression is very clear: He is a great, young guy with a lot of potential, who primarily needs confident leadership and reliable structures. This is evident even during walks: Pluto was apparently used to determining the direction. In the first few days, if it didn't go "his way," he tried to wriggle out of his collar and leash. However, Pluto quickly understood that he can follow us and that this gives him support and security. With this framework, he shows loyalty, is pleasant on the leash, and is quite sociable. He enjoys the attention of his people and is generally well-approachable when the leadership is clear. For Pluto, we are looking for dog-experienced individuals who can fairly and consistently explain the rules of living together to a young male dog – and who understand that issues like resources or protective behavior may need to be re-evaluated in the new home. If there are children, they should be teenagers; Pluto had a good relationship with older children in his family. If you would like to meet Pluto, please click the "Inquire about dog" button for the respective dog and complete the online form in full. This way, we receive all the relevant information for an initial conversation.

About Pluto

What life with Pluto looks like

Pluto is a young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Ludwigshafen in Ludwigshafen/Rheim.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pluto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pluto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Ludwigshafen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pluto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pluto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Ludwigshafen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pluto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pluto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Ludwigshafen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pluto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
