Adopt Poekie

European Shorthair · Female · Adult · 4 years

Hi, I'm Poekie and I'm 8 years old. I was asked if I wanted to introduce myself here, no problem of course. Actually, I can be very short: I'm a tabby. Most of you probably know how I am in terms of character, right? Do you still want to know more? Well, I do whatever I want and can entertain myself very well. I don't need a lot of cuddles, but if I want a few pats on my head, I'll let you know. If you don't follow my rules, you'll get a tap. Of course, only the owner can sometimes stroke me, visitors are not allowed. 'Looking is allowed, touching is not' is the rule. Furthermore, I'm very playful and love running around. I sprint through the house as if I'm running the Leiden marathon and like playing with aluminum foil balls. I also like playing outside and a hole in the wall through which I can freely go outside sounds great. How cool, I can just do more of what I want. What a joy it is to be a cat, then you can do that. And don't worry, I pay my rent once a month properly in the form of a mouse I bring home. I actually want to be very tough, but honestly, that doesn't work so well, because I'm quite easily scared by noises. For example, strong wind or children playing outside. If you live near a school, don't call me. If there are regular children in your house, then definitely not. I think a household with a maximum of two people is enough. I think other cats are stupid, especially those two that lived in my previous house. My previous neighbors suddenly had a barking four-legged animal, which I wasn't happy about either. Too scary. I get a bladder diet, but I don't make a fuss about food. I've also eaten a whole mountain of elastic bands once. That wasn't fun, I had to go to the vet. Naturally, I'm totally not a fan of that... I don't want to do that again, so keep elastic bands away from me and also pieces of foam rubber, like makeup sponges. Sometimes I gnaw a bit on my toys, those I really didn't plan to eat. Well, I'm Poekie, I've written quite a long text for you. Are you looking for a cozy, active, stubborn, independent, individualistic, shy, tough, and above all handsome cat? Contact me! And by the way, I have a clean mouth again thanks to the shelter's vet.

Zoals bijvoorbeeld harde wind of spelende kinderen buiten.

About Poekie

What life with Poekie looks like

Poekie is a adult european shorthair cat waiting at Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden in Leiden.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Poekie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Poekie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Poekie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Poekie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Poekie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Poekie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dierentehuis Stevenshage Leiden early rather than rehoming privately; they know Poekie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
