Poncho

Brittany Spaniel · Male · Adult · 6 years

Poncho needs a new home. The charming Brittany is looking for a new home and people who will give him security and structure. As a breed, he has a pronounced hunting drive with corresponding temperament which remains controllable only with consistent, loving training. He shows himself to be open, cuddly and playful towards his humans, and despite his energy, he is very sensitive and needs the close bond with his humans. Poncho currently lives in a family with a second dog and a baby, both of which are causing him difficulties as he has to share his humans. Poncho is particularly people-oriented and wants to please. He walks reasonably on a leash and knows basic commands and a dog whistle. He meets other dogs with suspicion due to his insecurity and decides according to his sympathy - with female dog he behaves much more relaxed and open. He has no problem being alone for a few hours and can easily travel in a dog crate in the car. He has already handled holidays very well. Poncho loves long walks and scent games, but can also be satisfied with short walks on quieter days. City visits cause him stress as he is not used to it. He enjoys shared activities and requires confident, loving leadership with a lot of patience and understanding to give him security and structure. For this wonderful Brittany, we wish a rural home and preferably a fenced property where he can freely express himself and play. Poncho is a great companion for people with dog experience and should be allowed to come in as a single dog. He still has a lot to learn, but with patience and empathy, he will gradually fit in. Taking responsibility for a rescue dog is always a special challenge. The dogs bring a backpack of past experiences or unlearned situations with them and need time to get used to their new life.

About Poncho

What life with Poncho looks like

Poncho is a adult brittany spaniel dog waiting at SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Poncho, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Poncho?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Poncho on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Poncho if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Poncho already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Poncho isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with SALVA Hundehilfe e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Poncho and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
