Poncho

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 4 years

By mid-December 2021, the six young dogs—four boys and two girls—moved into a pen at the Rescue. Penko, Perseo, Petra, Pigna, Pipo, and Poncho feel right at home there. However, the Rescue should only be a temporary stop for the sextet. It would be wonderful if they could soon embark on their journey to Germany to find their forever homes with people who will give them a close family connection. On February 26, 2022, Poncho traveled to his German foster home. On March 3, 2022, Poncho settled in very well at his foster home. He is appropriately playful for his age but is also the shyest in the trio. The boy is initially reserved and meets every two-legged being with caution. But bring enough treats into the mix, and he quickly warms up and is ready for a play session. The sweet little fellow is very eager to learn. He sleeps through the night and the house training is already going very well. Poncho wishes for a home where he can be actively involved. Shared sporting activities, dog training classes, and/or dog sports with his family are at the top of his wish list. Children are no problem for Poncho. Even a Fellnase or Samtpfote in the new home would be okay, but he can also be content as a lone prince. On June 4, 2026, Poncho and his dog friend Sunday had the great fortune of finding their own home in March 2022. It is sad, however, that both dogs are now losing their homes and are once again searching for people who will give them security, our area, and above all, stability. The reasons why dogs are given up are often varied. Sometimes questions remain unanswered, and we may not know the whole story. However, it is a fact that losing one's home is always a deep setback for the dogs. That is why we now wish for people for Poncho who are aware of the long-term responsibility for a pet and give him the chance to finally find his place. Poncho is a friendly and sensitive male dog who bonds closely with his family and greatly enjoys the proximity of his people. Extensive cuddle sessions, shared adventures, and being right in the middle of things—this is his world. Initially, he shows a more reserved and shy demeanor towards strangers. But once he has gained trust, he opens his heart and shows his loving character. Poncho is familiar with living with children, as well as cohabiting with other dogs, horses, and cats. He is house-trained, travels comfortably in the car, masters the basic commands, and has even learned a few tricks over the years. Poncho likes to be active, wants to be physically and mentally engaged, and seeks people who enjoy sharing their daily lives with a dog. A quiet, more rural home would suit him well, as bustling, large crowds, and city life are not his scene. Now, we hope that Poncho will get another chance to start anew. We hope that people will see him, give him time, and show him that a home can be permanent. A heartfelt thank you goes to photographer Stephanie Seitz, who supported Poncho with a photoshoot. If you are looking for a new family member and are aware that dogs bring joy but also a lot of work and responsibility for a hopefully long dog life, we look forward to your message. We provide dog placements nationwide.

About Poncho

What life with Poncho looks like

Poncho is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at ProTier e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Poncho, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Poncho?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ProTier e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Poncho on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Poncho if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ProTier e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Poncho already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Poncho isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ProTier e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Poncho and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
