Pongo

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 5 months

Pongo, the most handsome puppy we know <3 Poor Pongo is originally from Romania where he was dumped next to a ditch next to a ditch, in the middle of nowhere, as a young baby along with his sibling Purdy. They were both absolutely skin and bone and absolutely filthy. They were very fearful of humans so we can only imagine what they'd already been through in their short lives. Pongo is an extremely sensitive soul. He is very anxious, reactive to strangers and unfamiliar noises and relies heavily on his sister for confidence. Pongo isn't going to be a puppy that runs over and greets you in a viewing, the chances are that he's going to hide away and bark due to pure fear. Once Pongo gains confidence around you and starts showing you his true personality, he is the most funny, loving, goofy and playful boy you could meet. This will take time though and very likely, professional help with be required to help with his ongoing anxiety issues. He is going to be an amazing, happy and loyal dog in the right home but extra work is going to be required to help guide him along the way. Without proper guidance, Pongo will very likely suffer with anxiety and reactivity issues for the rest of his life and this wouldn't be fair on anyone, he needs setting up for success and we can point you in the right direction of the help that he will need. Pongo has massive trust issues with stranger and dogs have been the only constant that he has ever been able to rely on to make him feel safe. Pongo must go into a home with at least one resident dog already living there. A large female dog will be his best match. Once settled, Pongo is a typical puppy around other dogs, he can be very respective and listens to body language well but he can also get very boisterous and mouthy and he will need a nice confident dog to help guide him with acceptable behaviours, he can't be with a timid dog as he will absolutely torment the life out of them which wouldn't be fair to the current dog. We'd be looking for a dog around Labrador size, no older than middle age, one that can match is energy and help him with his anxiety issues by showing them that life is not as scary as he currently feels it is. Pongo is currently in a foster home and lives with a very confident cat. He shows absolutely no prey drive to the cat but he is quite obsessed with him and just wants to be near him, cleaning him and playing with him any time the cat is around. He will jump on him and play with him as he would another dog but there is no malice there at all. Sometimes the cat plays back, other times he takes himself away to one of his many areas that Pongo is not able to reach. Pongo doesn't cope being left alone. He cries and howls even if it's just for a few minutes, any time alone will need to be built up over time. With another dog, he should be fine for around 4 hours Pongo is currently extremely fearful of the outside world and can not yet walk outside. This will need to be slowly worked on over time Pongo is currently learning toilet training however he does have a way to go yet. We are currently building on his confidence in the foster home and so we are not able to train him basic manners until he is a lot less fearful

About Pongo

What life with Pongo looks like

Pongo is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Oakwood Dog Rescue in Kingston upon Hull.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pongo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pongo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Oakwood Dog Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pongo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pongo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Oakwood Dog Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pongo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pongo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Oakwood Dog Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pongo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
