Adopt Promise

Female

This girl has had a very hard life indeed. Her story starts at a slaughterhouse in Northern Ireland. Promise, her foal and 46 of her friends had ended up at this terrible place and were waiting to be killed and made into pet food. Some good Samaritans managed to save 8 of them, including Promise and her foal and get them safe passage away from the terrible place. Sadly, none of the others were spared. On the journey over, Promise was separated from her foal and placed at a yard with some of her fellow survivors. Promise was badly traumatised by the whole experience and it would seem her heart was broken. It was difficult to find a home for her as she was so nervous and worried about people and her separate anxiety from other horses was very difficult to manage. She is now safely with us and is being integrated into our main herd. She is rather worried but we are confident that she will soon be a much happier horse. We have changed her name to Promise to signify a new beginning and our promise to her that we will do our best and that life will be better from now on.

About Promise

What life with Promise looks like

Promise is a adult horse waiting at Willows Animal Sanctuary in United Kingdom.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Promise, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Promise?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Willows Animal Sanctuary handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Promise on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Promise if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Willows Animal Sanctuary will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Promise already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Promise isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Willows Animal Sanctuary early rather than rehoming privately; they know Promise and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (the shelter's own language). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
