Raffaello

Maltese · Male · Young · 1 year

Raffaello is a lively and friendly little guy who can be shy at first but quickly seeks contact with most people and becomes the type that immediately demands cuddles and kisses. However, if he gets very unsure (like in vet situations) Raffaello could snap out of panic. We therefore do not recommend him for households with small children. Raffaello enjoys going on walks. He still needs training as he pulls on the leash with excitement and chooses a zigzag course. At our shelter, Raffaello gets along well with other dogs. He is part of our "mini-WG", the socialization went mostly without problems. If Raffaello is unsure about the behavior of a roommate (a male tends to grumble quickly - both playfully and seriously), he reacts with frustrated barking in its direction. Being left alone could be a challenge for Raffaello. At our shelter, he sits together with other "minis" in one room that keep him company. Otherwise, he does not like being separated from his caregivers and then gets loud which can be very high-pitched. So there should be a plan B at the new home if leaving alone doesn't work even after settling in. Raffaello needs daily grooming. This is constantly underestimated with breeds like Maltese & Co. As he was heavily matted on arrival, we had to completely shear him - hence the short haircut in the photos, he actually has long fur. Housebreaking does not work 100% yet and must be trained at the new home as with a puppy. About Raffaello

What life with Raffaello looks like

Raffaello is a very small young adult maltese dog waiting at Tierheim Elmshorn in Elmshorn.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Raffaello, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Raffaello?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Elmshorn handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Raffaello on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Raffaello if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Elmshorn will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Raffaello already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Raffaello isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Elmshorn early rather than rehoming privately; they know Raffaello and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
