Rick

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Rick was finally rehomed in April 2017 with his new family, where he can now enjoy his life. No one is bothered by the lameness, which could not be completely eliminated despite all efforts, and it is still being tried to help Rick get rid of it. We are very happy that Rick managed to convince despite his disability and he now watches over his new master daily at the office, no joke, he sometimes distracts him so he doesn't forget his breaks!!!! ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………… I am male, neutered, born around 2006 and I am microchipped and vaccinated. I am about 60cm tall. I have been waiting for a new home since May 2016. This is what my caregivers say about me: Rick was finally handed over for further adoption with us after a long stay, due to the serious illness of the previous owner. He had even more bad luck, a male dog tore his front elbow, followed by a long and complicated recovery. Unfortunately, this has resulted in lasting damage, and for some unknown reason, he still limps on that leg. From the X-ray, everything is perfect, and during examinations, he showed no signs of pain. Even the last attempt, removing the screws followed by leech therapy, has only shown minimal success so far. We are not entirely sure whether it's a mental issue or the famous man's flu. There are still a couple of ideas, but we hope that with the future family, we can give our Wuschel a nice life on four paws. Rick is a pleasant companion and loves people of all sizes and ages. Initially, he pulls a little on the leash, but when he is out, he is quite well behaved on the leash. He is also a pleasant companion during car rides, likes to be everywhere and behaves appropriately. Being alone needs to be strengthened, and he sometimes seems stressed and makes himself noticed. Male dogs were not tested with us, he gets along well with female dogs. Rick's intelligence can be further developed, of course taking into account his age and previous illness. Since Rick is very friendly with people, we can easily imagine a new home for him in a family, also suitable as a first-time dog. Sometimes he gets excited and then lets the joker come out and jokes around. Otherwise, he is happy to be part of things. Suitable for apartment living or a house with a garden, but on ground level. Rick wants to end up in a responsible home, where he can finally enjoy family life to the fullest along with his walks and coat care... About Rick

What life with Rick looks like

Rick is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rick, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rick?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rick on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rick if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rick already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rick isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rick and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
