Rico

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Rico is a surrendered dog who ended up with us because his owner died and his other owner requires care. Unfortunately, the owners were overwhelmed in all areas of life due to their age, so the living conditions in and around the house were unbearable for both human and animal. After an extensive effort by the police, paramedics, the kind neighborhood, and our team, everything was clarified. We were initially satisfied that Rico was friendly and easygoing despite his breed. He didn't want to take a shower, so he calmly reveals his past with us. For his previous life and breed, he is very manageable and only slightly independent. He likes to work for treats and can easily learn to trust his new owner this way, and his education can still be further developed. During his castration, a large abdominal enlargement the size of a child's head was found, and we feared the worst. At the last visit with the vet, it was confirmed that everything is fine. A further ultrasound showed that all organs are free, and the enlargement is only a fluid-filled bladder that has significantly reduced and regressed after the castration. The fluid is still being examined, and the results will follow shortly. It must continue to be monitored, and it is very likely that it is a hormonal issue that has been resolved thanks to the castration. Rico has never shown any clinical complaints. He often seems to us like a huge teddy bear, he is very happy about affection and outings and is open towards everyone. Only during visits to the vet does his temperament change and his breed heritage comes to the surface, but he will allow a muzzle to be put on by people he trusts. He likes to ride in the car, is completely house-trained with us, is not a barker but alert and a great big bear who has more than earned a chance at a wonderful home after having experienced little besides the farm and nothing else so far. Who wants to finally show our cuddly Caucasian mix the wide world and give him a wonderful home???. Some symptoms here are age-related.

About Rico

What life with Rico looks like

Rico is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
