Rico

Pug · Male · Adult · 4 years

Meet Rico! Rico is looking for a very special home where he can feel safe, settle at his own pace and show the affectionate little character we are beginning to see. When Rico first arrived with us, he was extremely nervous and unsure. He didn’t want to interact and needed space and time to adjust. Slowly but surely, Rico has started to come out of his shell and build trust with the kennel staff caring for him. Once Rico gets to know you, a much softer side appears. He is a friendly boy and has discovered the joy of rolling over for belly rubs! Seeing his confidence grow has been lovely, but his new adopter will need to understand that this relationship won’t happen overnight. Rico needs people who will allow him to come around in his own time without putting pressure on him. Rico also arrived with skin problems, which are currently being treated by our vet. As part of this treatment, he needs baths twice a week using medicated shampoo. He is understandably nervous about baths, but he is a good boy and copes with reassurance and patient handling. Due to Rico’s needs, we are looking for a quiet, calm and experienced home. Previous experience with brachycephalic breeds would be a real advantage. Rico is avoidant and uncomfortable around other dogs, so he must be the only dog in the home. He needs a home where the focus can be on helping him feel secure and building his confidence at a pace that suits him. As Rico came into the home as a stray we have no previous history on him, and as he can be very nervous and unsure around new people we would like any children in the home to be 14+ years.

About Rico

What life with Rico looks like

Rico is a small adult pug dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rico, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rico?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rico on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rico if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rico already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rico isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rico and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
