Adopt Riley

Doberman · Male · Adult · 7 years

Shoulder height: 55 cm · With us since: 31.05.2021 Not suitable for families with children · Athletic and active Active, spirited, and eager to move - this describes Riley quite well. He comes from Spain and has not yet had a serious and proper home. Therefore, not much has been invested in his education. In the past, Riley often took his own paths to burn off energy. Quick movements increase his prey drive. He becomes restless and it can happen that he bites. We have taken over Riley from the "Coastal Dogs," a camp where attention is given specifically to dogs with behavioral issues. Through a calm, relaxed but consistent leadership, he was shown how to deal with his energy well. He is now a well-behaved dog. Under supervision, he can also happily (provided it's not too dynamic) run in a dog group. He is house-trained, well on a leash, and basic obedience is good. He also meets cars or people coming towards him relatively calmly. Riley's biggest issue right now is his food aggression. He defends his food and it is very difficult to take away. This can be worked on with intensive trust-building. However, the new owners must continue to train him so that he does not fall back into old behavior patterns. If the dog-human relationship is good, Riley is a clingy and playful dog who likes to snuggle and wants to be with his humans. In his new home, only 1-2 dog-experienced trusted people should live. Since Riley gets restless with noise and commotion, the home should be rather rural or in a quiet area. We wish for Riley a loving forever home, but we can also imagine a foster home for him. Walks well on a leash.

03841 - 79 01 79

About Riley

What life with Riley looks like

Riley is a large adult doberman dog waiting at Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Riley, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Riley?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Riley on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Riley if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Riley already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Riley isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Dorf Mecklenburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Riley and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
