Buddy

Doberman · Unknown · Adult · 8 years

Buddy is a dream dog who wants nothing more than to please his primary caregiver. With fair treatment and clear communication, he is a very reliable companion who leaves no wishes unfulfilled. He shows himself to be very approachable at the animal shelter. He displays no aggression towards humans, behaves somewhat cautiously towards strangers at first, but quickly gains trust. After a brief getting-to-know-you phase, he enjoys being petted and can relax very well during this time. He can easily walk past barking dogs behind fences, and with a little help, he also handles direct contact with other dogs on walks very well. He does not hunt and is always responsive. Buddy is a true workhorse; he loves training with his primary caregiver and is highly motivated by food rewards. He learns incredibly fast and always approaches it with great enthusiasm. Playing (in moderation) is also a lot of fun for him! Typical of his breed, his excitement level rises quickly. He has now learned to calm down just as quickly using relaxation techniques and a simple sequence of signals, and if this way of interacting with him continues, he poses no danger. Moreover, he can handle many more stimuli and situations before he even gets stressed. He has not shown resource-guarding aggression here. Only when chewing on chew items does he want to be left alone. Buddy's time in the HuKo project is coming to an end, so he urgently needs a home. We can hardly believe that there has been no single inquiry about him yet. What could be the reason? Those interested in him should already have experience in (positive) dog training. Of course, support from our dog trainer is provided here.

About Buddy

What life with Buddy looks like

Buddy is a large adult doberman dog waiting at Tierschutzbund RLP e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Buddy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Buddy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzbund RLP e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Buddy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Buddy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzbund RLP e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Buddy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Buddy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzbund RLP e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Buddy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
