Rio

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 4 months

Rio is a young dog who knows all too well what it means to lose a home. He is the son of Trella, one of the podenca mothers who was rescued along with Piga and Xispa from a house where over 40 dogs lived in poor conditions. As a puppy, Rio had the opportunity to start a new life. About a year ago, he was adopted along with Bop, the son of Piga and his companion from that first stage. During all this time, they had a family and a home to call their own. But now, both have returned to the shelter because their adopters have decided they no longer want to take care of them. Rio does not understand motives or decisions. He only knows how to love and enjoy the people around him. He is a very affectionate and playful dog, always looking for a moment to play and share with you. He has a lot of life ahead of him and deserves to have a family that loves him and, this time, does not leave. His return reminds us of something important: adopting means assuming a commitment for life. Circumstances may change, but before taking the step, it is essential to consider whether we can continue taking care of that animal even when it is no longer a puppy or when things get complicated. Rio has had to start over once already. Now we want this to be the definitive one. We are looking for a family for him who wants to enjoy his games, receive all his love, and accompany him throughout his life. Rio is ready to start over. About Rio

What life with Rio looks like

Rio is a puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Huellas Callejeras in Spain.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Huellas Callejeras handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Huellas Callejeras will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Huellas Callejeras early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
